We get asked asked this question a lot, and we are adamant that there is only one answer:
However much you feel comfortable and happy spending.
We have sold rings to mark an engagement at any and all price points between $100 and $10,000, and some more expensive than that.
An engagement ring is a sentimental and symbolic piece of jewelry. It’s an invitation to a shared future of loving commitment. There is no way to put a price on that, and we encourage people not to conflate depth of feeling with the amount of money spent.
So our advice about spending is this: Decide your budget before looking at rings, and if possible, talk it through as a couple. You are a partnership now; you’re building or growing your life together, so this is worth taking time over.
Ask your beloved about their wishes, and see what they say - they may surprise you! There are some who will imply that this takes all the romance out of a proposal, but we disagree. Money worries can make for serious stress on a relationship, so be honest with one another and get clear on your collective priorities. This way, you will know what’s right for you both.
You may decide that you are happy with a smaller ring for now and will upgrade later. Or that you’d rather prioritize splurge-spending for the honeymoon of a lifetime or saving for a downpayment on a home. These are all perfectly valid perspectives.
